It was the period right after the quarantine when we decided to get to know better -with the help of technology- two overly talented young men from Hungary and (their) electronic music. A lot of things were said but we focused on their love towards the female sex, the nature and their life-long bonding relationship.
How did you meet in the first place and how did this relationship evolve into the creation of “Belau”?
Me (Peter) and Chris knows each other from age 10, we were classmates and best friends, had many good musical experiences but never played together until I started to work on Belau after many years. We didn’t know it gets bigger and playing almost whole Europe.
Three and a half years after the release of the debut album, what has changed regarding your work and beliefs and what has stayed the same?
Our friendship and aims are the same but most of the things has changed in a good way. After The Odyssey released we started to tour across Europe. In the last years we played almost 200 shows in 23 countries and played at renowned festivals like Primavera, Eurosonic, Electric Castle, Sziget, SXSW – to name just a few. Belau was supported by radios like BBC Radio 1 or KEXP and mediums like Clash Music, Billboard, The Line of Best Fit, or Ones to Watch. Our first album won the Hungarian Grammy Award, recently reached one million streams with earlier releases. It’s a more thoughtful release, that keeps providing shelter for the modern human through music, where listeners can sink to themselves and their thoughts. ‘Colouwave’ is a multi-layered concept release that on the basis is trying to represent a path to self-awareness by using the sounds of the nature mixed up with precise and modern beats. It also hardly relies on the messages and instructions of the nature that surrounds us – especially the sea – and on the top of that Belau continued the geographical concept – familiar from The Odyssey-era – that this time reflects musically and visually to the thousand colors of the Caribbean area.
How was your collaboration with the featured artists and how would you describe this album?
It not only features one or two collaborations, actually it was the main concept for the ’Colourwave’ LP, to involve talented female artists from all over the world. This is not unusual from us, because we continued the same idea after the heartwarming success of the debut record. Here is the list of these wonderful women who features ’Colourwave’: Sophie Barker (ex-Zero7), Amahla, Belle Doron (CUT_), Yasaquarius, Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjærg (ex-Blue Foundation), Sophie Lindinger (Leyya), BÖBE, Saya Noé and Ayah Marar. We asked all the featured vocalists for take part in our journey, and we’re really glad that we have songs with these super talaented artists. It’s also a concept that we always work with females. Writing songs with them was really different with all of them. We didn’t meet some of them, but we talked about belau, the concept, and our thoughts before the creative process.
How hard was it to work on and complete your second oncoming album “Colourwave” in the middle of the pandemic?
We finalized it january, and would like to release it March, but we decided that we would like to reschedule it for end of May. Regarding orgazining it was hard, also cancelled/recheduled our our tour, but regarding the music making side it maybe affects to the next album.
It’s evident from your songs that you get mostly inspired by the nature. Was this the idea in the first place or it occurred somehow on the way?
Yes nature and travel are the main inspirations The long-term goals of Belau include the creation of multiple concept LPs, each capturing the vibe of a different geographical region around the world.
Is, the fact that you had to reschedule your tour for so much later, stressful for you?
Not stressful, but a bit weird, and incalculatable, but we’re try to stay positive, and hopefully we could have a release show also in Greece.
How do you cope with the competition in this field after your success?
We don’t wanna compete others with ourselves and make better and better music, concerts, videos, etc…
